Chapter Fifteen

Six hours later, Taylor clenched back what felt like the six hundredth tremor through his muscles—then unfurled his hand to run a caress across Gwen’s hair. She shifted in his lap, warming his neck with her sleep-heavy sigh.

They’d finally freed her from the trance—a feat he felt certain in terming the most terrifying experience of his life.

After ten more minutes of grappling with her on the floor, Post had resorted to slapping her. The result hadn’t been too detrimental, Taylor reflected sardonically; she only ceased to breathe for a full half minute. At last, thank God, she’d collapsed into Taylor’s lap, sobbing; after fifteen minutes of that, her agony ebbed into this leaden slumber.

The library’s leather couch crunched as she again wriggled for comfort. This time she curled her head down, to spread heat into his chest. Yet after her breathing evened, the center of him still smoldered with an inundating warmth. It took only a moment of introspection to recognize the sensation as utter relief sparked into fierce possessiveness, as rage toward Helson now directed into fury at himself.

Just as the resolve never to touch her again was annihilated by this fear of ever letting her go.

“Ah, Gwen,” he whispered, raising his sights to the angels painted in the wall frieze as if he’d see her face adorning one of them. As if she’d smile down and soothe his turmoil with an easy answer to his rasping query:

“Gwendolen Marsh, what the hell have you done to me?”

“Mmmm.” Her drowsy mumble tickled his left nipple— not the consoling solution he’d requested from on high. With a resolved swallow, he dipped his sights to her again.

She already blinked her gaze up at him. “Hello,” she murmured.

“Hello,” he answered huskily.

“Where are we?” She managed a weak look around.

“Still in the library. Do you recall anything about the session?”

Her brows drew together. “No. But the trance must have been long. I’m very tired.” She licked her lips, then pressed them together. “And very sad. Did I…remember it all?”

Taye hesitated only a second before tightening his arms around her. “That doesn’t matter right now. There’ll be time later. Another day, when you feel better.”

“Yes.” She reclined her head against his shoulder. “When I feel…”

He heard her long, difficult gulp. Taylor moved his hand to her hair again. He didn’t know which strands wound tighter, the copper coils around his fingers or the savage-sweet ties around his gut. Right now, he didn’t want to know. He wanted only the moment to matter. He wanted only her to matter.

“It’s all right to cry,” he told her in another rough grate.

Slowly, gratefully, she nodded. Openly, quietly, she drenched his neck and his collar with her tears. She didn’t say anything, but Taye knew no words existed for the feelings. He knew it because the same speechless frustration clamored at the restraints of his own soul, and he hated the sensation with unutterable violence. He hated the anger that the hypnosis session hadn’t purged a drop of, as he’d hoped—as he’d expected.
